5 Habits That Will Improve Your Life

To paraphrase a Langston Hughes poem: Life ain't no crystal stair. That doesn't mean that this life and living isn't a beautiful gift, it just means that sometimes we need to do a little interior design, housekeeping and window opening in our lives to keep things fresh and foster personal growth. One of the ways we can accomplish this is by letting go of old things and starting new. We all have the power to improve our lives and manifest our wildest dreams. Self-improvement can change the way you talk, behave and think. It will allow you to make new discoveries and advances in both your public and private life. This is why we want to share a few new habits with you that can improve your life.

Develop a Morning and Bedtime Routine

Waking up around the same time each day can set you on course for more productive and fulfilling days. If you choose to wake up, spend 15 minutes doing yoga, have a cup of tea or coffee, then take a shower before heading out for the day, stick to it. Having a morning routine means that you know exactly how much time you need in order to get started so you can make better use of your time. A night time routine often means a more restful and quality sleep. Your bedtime routine should be one that relaxes you. Being consistent with your routines also helps to develop self-discipline, which may seep into other parts of your life.

Start a Gratitude Practice

Writing in a gratitude journal is a great habit to start. Set aside a few minutes each day to write down three things you are grateful for. Be as specific as possible about what you're grateful for. Instead of writing that you're grateful to have good food, recount a particular meal and what made it so good for or to you. Because our minds instinctively look for the negative, dangers and improbabilities as a way of keeping us safe, pointing out the positives can begin to rewire the brain to dwell on the positives.

Add an Energizing Afternoon Activity to Your Schedule

Sometimes we can hit a midday block. The morning's activities have almost drained you and you're counting down to the end of your day. Adding some energy to your afternoon could be just the thing to bring you out of those afternoon blues. Carving out five or ten minutes to do something energizing is a great way to boost your mood, your health or stimulate your intellect. In case you're drawing a blank, here a few suggestions:

  • Climb the stairs of your building a certain number of times.
  • Take a little walk.
  • Listen (and dance around) to your favorite tunes.
  • Phone someone who's guaranteed to make you smile.
  • Read something.

Regularly Revisit Your Goals

Whether you have lofty dreams or bite sized goals, it's a good idea to check in with them regularly. Doing this can not only keep you focused on making them a reality, but it also allows you to make any necessary pivots as the proverbial climate changes. You may do a check in and find out that you are a lot closer to the end goal that you realized. You may even realize that you have new goals or that you need to rearrange some priorities. Whether it's weekly, monthly or daily, be sure to tend to your goals and dreams. They are important and vital to your being.

Get Some Fresh Air

I can't say enough about getting outside and getting some fresh air. Whether you take a walk or a bike ride, go hiking or sit on a tire swing, breathing in the fresh air does wonders for the body. If you have a demanding job, be sure to take tiny sun breaks throughout the day when you are able. the combination of the sun on your skin and the fresh air are sure to change your mood.
